Abstract
In academic and professional settings, individuals encounter situations requiring them to speak with little prior preparation to an audience. To cultivate this essential skill, university students are often assessed through tasks, such as impromptu talk, job interviews and technical interviews.
This paper details the decade-long development of the Interactive Speaking Platform (ISP), a learning platform, designed to address this need. The ISP currently houses three modules: impromptu speaking skills, job interview skills and technical interview skills for young engineers. Each module, structured within the Behavioural Skills Training (Ward-Horney and Sturmey, 2012), features three units: instruction input, demonstration, and self-practice.
The ISP’s resources, including videos and supplementary notes, support the university’s English Learning Teaching Unit curriculum, providing readily available materials for supplemental instruction. ISP’s materials have been integrated into two courses, reaching 800+ students annually at the university. Furthermore, this platform offers additional self-learning and practice opportunities tailored to individual user needs.
The ISP is entering its 10th year, having begun as a micro-module project in 2015, and is currently open-access, potentially benefitting more users and institutions. This presentation will share insights from a decade of platform development and how the ISP supports a range of pedagogical and learning strategies, including flipped classroom, blended learning and self-access. Such insights will be valuable and empowering for university teachers and other professionals undertaking similar initiatives and utilizing the platform’s speaking resources for their own uses.
