Abstract
This poster presentation will showcase a collaborative, language learning activity used as a final assessment project for an EFL speaking course at a private university in Japan. In this project, students work in small groups to design, build, and present an original game for fellow students to learn and play. The task requires learners to collaboratively develop a game concept and create clear rules and instructions along with an optional demonstration video. Students then use various materials to prepare their game for demonstration. The project ends with a Games Fair event in which they present and play their games with another class.
This task encourages collaboration through design, construction, and play testing of their original games. In small groups, students share ideas and brainstorm game concepts before drafting their rules and defining their game’s objectives. Then students build their game using a variety of craft materials and/or supplies. Finally, students test their game within their groups or with other class members in preparation for the final Games Fair event. This extensive task encourages meaningful interaction and collaboration to produce a finished product.
The final Games Fair event encourages collaboration by requiring students to communicate with unfamiliar peers, adapt to challenges in real time, and engage in cooperative play. This poster highlights the task design, creative process, and learning goals. The presenters will also discuss the potential of collaborative game design projects as an effective approach for promoting communication and collaboration across language learning classrooms.
