This presentation describes an exploratory study in a first-y ear Japanese university reading course where students used CommonLit for w eekly online reading\, vocabulary work\, and Moodle-based discussions. A p re- and post-course survey examined the changes in students’ self-percei ved overall English\, reading\, and discussion abilities. I will share key findings and ways instructors can integrate platforms such as CommonLit i nto their own classrooms.\nトラヴィス・ブラックバーン:日本 の大学生におけるCommonLitの活用：自己認知による読解 力・語彙力・討論能力の探究\n近年、授業で使用できる 真正性の高い読解教材を見つけることに苦労している 教員は多く、また、そうしたテキストに取り組んだ後 に学生が自分の能力をどのように捉えているのかは必 ずしも明確ではありません。本発表では、日本の大学1 年次のリーディング授業において、学生がCommonLitを用 いて毎週オンライン読解、語彙学習、Moodle上でのディ スカッションに取り組んだ探索的研究について報告し ます。授業前後に実施したアンケート調査により、英 語全般の能力、読解力、討論能力に関する学生の自己 認知がどのように変化したかを検討しました。主要な 結果を共有するとともに、CommonLitのようなプラットフ ォームを各自の授業に取り入れる方法についても紹介 します。\n \nScott Webber: How Activity Theory Can Help the Learning Environment\nAll learning environments are complex. There are a host of fa ctors that instructors should be aware of in order to make a rewarding and nurturing learning environment for our students. This is easier said than done. To help shed light on these ‘known knowns and known unknowns and unknown unknows’ activity theory could help instructors adjust and build healthy learning environments. Previously to coming to Ehime University\, he taught at Junior and High School levels. His current research focuses on how student perceptions and anxiety affect learning choices.\nトラヴィス・ブラックバーンは、日本で 9年間英語を教えており、現在は愛媛大学の助教として 、英語コミュニケーション、ビジネス英語、リーディ ングおよびライティングの授業を担当している。愛媛 大学に着任する以前は、中学校・高等学校で英語を教 えていた。現在の研究関心は、学生の自己認知や不安 が学習上の選択にどのような影響を与えるかにある。\n  \nScott Webber is an EFL instructor at Ehime University. He has worked i n the education field for more than 25 years in Canada\, Japan and Qatar. His research interests are in language learning\, simulation-based educati on\, activity theory and multicultural communication\, to name a few.
