Description
This research explores the value of integrating phrase-level top-down instruction for L2 beginner learners.
Listening involves both bottom-up and top-down processing. Beginners primarily depend on bottom-up decoding, whereas advanced learners often combine both approaches. Prioritizing sound features is essential for beginners; however, coupling this with brief phrase-level prediction tasks led to significant gains in listening comprehension and learner confidence. Integrating such top-down support appears to facilitate early language development.
Summary
This research explores the significance of integrating phrase level top-down instruction for L2 beginner learners. L2 learners utilize both bottom-up and top-down processing while listening (Nunan, 2015; Vandergrift, 2007). Beginner learners rely primarily on bottom-up processing, whereas advanced learners often combine it with top-down processing to aid their comprehension (Rost, 2013). Recognizing sound features is a priority for beginners, and it was observed that simultaneously incorporating phrase level top-down instruction considerably improves their language development.
