Description
This research project, supported by a Japanese federal grant, investigates how access to an integrated dictionary during ER affects learners’ ability to accurately guess meaning. First-year English majors use the ER application Xreading which offers optional access to glossary definitions while reading. Pre- and post-treatment surveys of reading strategy usage as well as tests of ability to guess meaning from context are employed.
Summary
The best way to enhance an EFL program is to do extensive reading (ER) and it dictionary use is often discouraged when doing ER. This Kaken-supported research project investigates how access to an integrated online dictionary within the Xreading platform affects the ability to accurately guess meaning. Self-reported usage of various reading strategies as well as changes in the ability to accurately guess meaning from context do not indicate overall significant differences between the groups.
