Description

This presentation introduces a college-level EFL course that integrates manga creation with AI chatbot assistance to enhance English writing and related academic skills. The approach adopts a Project-Based Learning model and was implemented for health sciences majors, with the goal of providing useful local information for foreign residents and visitors. Through group-based manga creation, students learned to use language appropriately across different registers and practiced “virtual conversations” by writing dialogues in speech bubbles. Formal and academic writing skills were further developed by creating narrative texts in caption boxes. Additionally, ChatGPT was employed to foster learner autonomy by providing immediate feedback, enabling students to check grammatical accuracy and refine their writing independently. This presentation will showcase the overall manga-based approach, outline its anticipated outcomes, and explain how it contributed to the development of students’ writing and academic skills. It will also discuss how combining creative tasks with AI-assisted feedback can support meaningful and autonomous language learning experiences in EFL contexts, while highlighting pedagogical insights gained from this classroom practice.
