Description
Writing is said to be the hardest language skill to grasp for foreign language learners (Chamot 2005; Richards & Renandya 2002). It is also often considered as a boring skill to learn due to different reasons such as repetitive and uninteresting topics (Solhi et al., 2024), as well as under-challenging or over-challenging tasks (Li et al., 2023), which can result in students’ demotivation in writing. In the Japanese context, students face academic writing adjustment when entering university due to their lack of writing experience in high school (Curle & Pun, 2021, Yasuda, 2014).
In this workshop, we will present enjoyable and engaging activities that can improve not only students’ writing skills but also their writing motivation. While some activities are created by ourselves, some are adapted from other materials (e.g., Nation, 1997). Each activity will focus on different aspects of writing: increasing writing speed, encouraging creativity and collaboration, understanding grammar points, making creative sentences, as well as raising awareness on the importance of writing. Participants in the workshop will be able to try out the activities as language learners and share their opinions.
