Description
Many teachers know about extensive reading and how it has been found to benefit English learners in a variety of ways (Mason & Krashen, 1997; Iwahori, 2008; Schmitt, 2000). However, teachers may feel unsure about how to use extensive reading in their classroom, possibly relying on book reports to assess extensive reading. On the other hand, Jacobs & Chau (2021) explain the multiple benefits of engaging in extensive reading through cooperative learning.
In this presentation, the presenter will share their experience with teaching extensive reading for six years in a university classroom, outline their basic flow of teaching extensive reading, and reflect on how their method created student engagement and meaningful learning. Participants will brainstorm ways to adapt the presented approach to their own teaching context and share activities and tips from their experience.
