The Same Story, Different Worlds: Media, Culture, and Menning in the Ehime Maru Tragedy

This presentation examines cross-cultural media coverage of the Ehime Maru tragedy through the presenter's dual perspective as a former Kyodo News journalist and current researcher. Drawing on firsthand reporting experiences in Los Angeles and later analysis using Entman's framing theory, it explores how Japanese and US. media constructed different narratives of the same event. The session also highlights Hawai’i as a site of intercultural communication and healing. Designed for educators and students, it offers practical ways to develop critical media literacy and cross-cultural awareness in English language classrooms

 

同じ出来事、異なる世界:えひめ事故におけるメディア・文化・意味

本発表では、えひめ丸事故の報道を、元共同通信記者としての経験と現在の研究の両面から考察する。発表者はロサンゼレスにて取材に携わり、その後、エントマンのフレーミング理論を用いて日米メディアの報道を分析した。同一の出来事がどのように異なる形で語れるのかを、見出しや語りの構造を注目して検討する。また、ハワイを異文化間コミュニケーションと癒しの場として位置付ける。本発表は、英語教育における批判的思考力と異文化理解を深めるための実践的視点を提供する。

Bio:

Seana K. Magee is a lecturer at Matsuyama University specializing in intercultural communication and media studies. Her research examines cross-cultural news narratives, including the Ehime Maru tragedy. She previously worked as a journalist with Kyodo News in Los Angeles and New York, most recently as a United Nations reporter. Her current work explores media, memory, and communication.

ショーナ・マギーは松山大学の講師であり。専門は異文化コミュニケーションとメディア研究です。研究では、えひめ丸事故を含む異文化間ニュース報道を分析しています。共同通信社の記者としてロサンゼルスおよびニューヨークで勤務し、直近で国連担当記者を務めました。現在はメディアと記憶、コミュニケーションの関係を研究しています。
