Description

This forum introduces the International Virtual Exchange Project (IVE) as a scalable alternative to traditional study abroad and examines how Japanese university students use English as a lingua franca in intercultural communication.
Edo Forsythe will explain the research he’s published based on university students’ participation in online intercultural collaborations (OIC) like the IVEProject regarding students’ preferred discussion topics, students’ opinions of OICs, and the effects of long-term participation on students’ engagement levels.
Roxana Sandu will explore how Japanese students engage in the IVE to communicate in English within a global learning community. The presentation focuses on students’ expectations and perceived outcomes of participating in the IVE and examines how these perceptions may facilitate or hinder their active participation in the project. Finally, we will discuss ideas for successful inclusion of OICs in English classes.
