This talk explores zines and how physical zine-making can be integrated into writing classes. Key topics include production tips, material choices, examples of student work, and a comparison between Western and Japanese approaches to zine creation.
Abstract section 2: Contribution/research questions
The main purpose of this presentation is to encourage teachers to try new creative ways to develop more authentic student expression in the class, and to develop more meaningful intereactions between both other students and teachers. Practical advice and materials will be provided to assist participants achieve that goal.
Abstract section 1: Relevance
In a world where more and more output is being moved to the digital realm of “non-things”, physical zine production gives students a chance to interact with the material world and to take time and reflect on messages and ideas they want to convey to people around them. As teachers, most of us have seen a rise in non-original AI assisted work being submitted for writing classes, leading many of us to look at how we might incorporate “the old ways” into our teaching. Zines are a great way to make writing personal and meaningful again!
Abstract section 4: Outcomes/results
Participants will learn about the underlying ethos of zine-making, how to incorporate a creative zine-making project into their writing classes, production techniques for creating a one-page zine and managing student work, and practical advice on potential hurdles that teachers and students might face.
Abstract section 3: Content/method
I will introduce key concepts and backgound covering the history and production of zines. We will then move on to practical examples of how writing and making zines can be incorporated into the language classroom and assessments. Finally there will be an opportunity for participants to interact with tools, techniques, and materials used for zine production as well as chance to look at student examples for inspiration.
