Abstract section 1: Relevance
Generative AI has challenged traditional approaches to academic integrity and writing assessment. Focusing primarily on whether a student submission was written with the help of AI may provide limited insight into how students actually developed their ideas, revised their writing, or used AI during the learning process. Current discussions of AI literacy and authentic assessment increasingly emphasize transparency, process, reflection, and responsible use. This presentation considers a process-oriented approach to writing assessment, exploring how visibility into students’ writing and AI interactions can support educators in shifting the conversation from detecting misconduct toward authentic assessment of learning.

The presentation will introduce recent data highlighting common challenges educators face when assessing writing in the age of generative AI.
