This hands-on workshop introduces a precision-based approach to vocabulary teaching using the NGSL and AI-powered corpus tools. Participants will learn how to profile texts, evaluate lexical coverage, adapt materials, and generate level-appropriate readings. Through guided practice, teachers will explore how frequency-informed decisions and AI tools can streamline materials development and support more efficient vocabulary learning.
Abstract section 2: Contribution/research questions
This practice-oriented workshop demonstrates how teachers can implement a precision-based vocabulary workflow using NGSL word lists and AI-supported corpus tools. The purpose is to show how lexical profiling, coverage analysis, and AI-assisted text generation can be integrated into everyday teaching and materials design to improve vocabulary efficiency and reading support.
Abstract section 1: Relevance
Vocabulary size is one of the strongest predictors of reading comprehension and overall proficiency (Nation, 2013; Schmitt, 2010). Research in corpus linguistics and lexical coverage shows that high-frequency vocabulary accounts for the majority of texts learners encounter (Nation, 2006). However, classroom materials often lack systematic frequency control. Recent advances in AI and corpus-informed tools make it possible to operationalize frequency-based pedagogy efficiently. This workshop addresses the gap between lexical research and classroom practice by demonstrating how NGSL-aligned tools can support principled vocabulary selection, text evaluation, and materials adaptation.
Abstract section 4: Outcomes/results
Participants will gain practical experience using frequency-informed tools to evaluate and adapt materials. They will learn how to determine whether a text provides adequate lexical coverage, how to pre-teach strategically selected vocabulary, and how to generate controlled input using AI tools aligned with NGSL levels. By the end of the session, attendees will have a replicable workflow for integrating corpus research, extensive reading principles, and AI-supported materials development into their own teaching contexts.

Participants will engage in guided, hands-on activities using NGSL-aligned digital tools. They will (1) profile texts for lexical coverage, (2) identify high-frequency gaps, (3) adapt or rewrite texts for different proficiency levels, and (4) generate level-appropriate reading materials. Live demonstrations and structured tasks will allow participants to apply each step of the workflow.
