Abstract section 1: Relevance
English-medium instruction (EMI) has expanded rapidly in universities in Japan as part of efforts to internationalize higher education. Previous studies have identified factors that affect students’ experiences in EMI, such as English proficiency, motivation, and learning strategies. However, most of these studies relied on cross-sectional data collected at a single point in time, which limits our understanding of how students’ perceived challenges and learning outcomes change over time (Macaro et al., 2018).
Abstract section 2: Contribution/research questions
This exploratory longitudinal mixed-methods pilot study examines how students experience challenges and learning in a single EMI course from the beginning to the end of the semester and explores learner characteristics associated with these experiences. As part of a larger mixed-methods research project, this presentation reports findings from a pilot study involving approximately 10 students enrolled in an EMI course at a private university in Japan.
Abstract section 3: Content/method
Quantitative and qualitative data are collected at the beginning and end of the semester using surveys, course-aligned assessments, and semi-structured interviews. The surveys examine students’ perceived difficulty of classroom activities as well as background, proficiency, motivation, and prior EMI experience. The course-aligned assessments measure students’ learning outcomes. Semi-structured interviews explore students’ perceptions of challenges encountered in the EMI course and their reflections on their learning experiences.
Abstract section 4: Outcomes/results
Quantitative data are analyzed descriptively, and interview data will be used to explain and elaborate patterns identified in the pre/post survey and assessment data. The pilot study provides preliminary insights into how students perceive and respond to challenges in EMI courses. In addition to presenting initial findings, this presentation will discuss methodological considerations and directions for the larger study.
