Speaker

Donna Lim

Abstract section 3: Content/method

The presentation begins with an overview of core areas of language development in contemporary English Language education. It then analyzes selected picturebook examples to illustrate how they can support core areas such as vocabulary acquisition, grammar in context, reading strategies, oracy skills, and writing tasks. Classroom strategies and practical applications will be discussed, followed by pedagogical implications and recommendations for implementation in diverse teaching contexts.

Abstract section 4: Outcomes/results

Participants will explore the pedagogical value of picturebooks in fostering linguistic competence, imagination, and intercultural awareness. The session will examine how visual and verbal narratives create layered meanings that stimulate critical thinking and emotional engagement. Educators will gain practical strategies for using picturebooks to connect students’ local experiences with global issues. By the end of the presentation, participants will understand how to transform literacy lessons into inclusive, reflective spaces that nurture culturally responsive and globally minded learners, extending the impact of English Language education beyond the classroom.

Abstract section 1: Relevance

In today’s interconnected and multimodal world, literacy education must extend beyond traditional print to embrace multiliteracies that foster cultural awareness, critical thinking, and empathy. Contemporary English Language curricula increasingly emphasize these broader competencies. Within this evolving framework, picturebooks offer a powerful yet often underestimated pedagogical tool. Their integration of text and image creates rich opportunities for meaning-making while supporting linguistic development. By engaging both cognitive and emotional dimensions of learning, picturebooks help young learners connect personal experiences with broader social and global contexts, making them highly relevant for 21st-century English Language classrooms.

Abstract section 2: Contribution/research questions

This presentation aims to demonstrate how picturebooks can be intentionally integrated into the English Language classroom to connect local identities with global perspectives. It seeks to highlight their potential to deepen language learning while fostering intercultural understanding, empathy, and critical engagement. The session will also provide practical insights for educators seeking to enrich literacy instruction through meaningful and globally responsive practices.
