Description
This poster will demonstrate how ChatGPT can be used to create original reading materials aligned with CELTA-style pedagogical principles. Practical prompting strategies, examples of texts and accompanying activities tailored to language level, topic, and grammar focus, and guidance on iterating and refining materials will be included. Attendees will learn how AI can reduce the time and cognitive load of material creation while supporting teacher autonomy, flexibility, and creativity in designing effective reading lessons.
Abstract section 3: Content/method
The poster will outline an approach for effectively prompting ChatGPT to produce appropriate reading passages. Example texts and lesson materials will illustrate passages of varying text length, CEFR level, and language features, and show accompanying activities. Examples will include a 200-word passage on social media addiction that systematically recycles the first conditional, accompanied by vocabulary and comprehension activities. Strategies for iterating and refining generated texts to ensure pedagogical alignment will also be presented.
Abstract section 1: Relevance
Creating effective reading materials that align with pedagogical goals has long been a challenge in English language teaching. CELTA training emphasizes structured reading lessons with purposeful lead-ins, pre-reading tasks, and post-reading extensions, yet commercial textbooks often apply these principles inconsistently. Adapting existing materials can be helpful but is time-consuming and cognitively demanding. Recent developments in large language models such as ChatGPT, offer new opportunities to generate original reading passages tailored to specific teaching aims.
Abstract section 2: Contribution/research questions
This poster will demonstrate a workflow for using ChatGPT to create original reading materials that reflect CELTA-style pedagogical principles. It will show the ease with which materials can be created with specific teaching goals in mind, including language level, topic, and target language features.
Abstract section 4: Outcomes/results
Attendees will see examples of efficiently-produced customized reading passages created using ChatGPT, and learn strategies for producing their own. The approach will illustrate how AI can support teacher autonomy, flexibility, and creativity in designing reading lessons.
