With Central Asia’s population passing 80 million and over half under 25, the region faces an urgent demand for higher education. In response, countries like Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are rapidly expanding international partnerships and branch campuses. Drawing from firsthand experience across three tertiary institutions in Central Asia, an American EFL/EAP instructor explores career opportunities for educators.
Abstract section 1: Relevance
The population of Central Asia has grown dramatically—from 53 million in 1991 to more than 80 million in 2024—and over half of its people are under the age of 25. This demographic surge presents an urgent question: who will educate this rapidly expanding generation? To meet rising demand, many leaders are looking beyond the region’s borders and forging international partnerships in higher education. As a result, Uzbekistan has emerged as a key destination for global academic collaboration, now ranking third worldwide in hosting international branch campuses.
