Abstracts :
Developing a UDL (Universal Design for Learning) Mindset
In 2025, David was a recipient of the LIFT scholarship from the Accessibility in Language Learning SIG. This allowed him to take a “UDL Mindset” course from the founding organization, CAST.  In this lecture, David will present what he has learned in the course: the theory behind UDL and how it has transitioned from a mindset for accommodating learners from special needs to how it can benefit all learners.

Optimizing Student Engagement Through UDL
In this lecture, David will present practical ways to use the UDL Guidelines 3.0 to make lessons more engaging for all learners and will share the outcomes achieved by applying the guidelines in his own classroom.  This plain English, commonsense approach will make the UDL guidelines more accessible to our members.

アブストラクト：
ユニバーサルデザイン学習（UDL）マインドセットの育成
2025年、デイビッドは言語学習アクセシビリティ特別研究グループ（SIG）よりLIFT奨学金を授与された。これにより創設組織CASTの「UDLマインドセット」講座を受講可能となった。本講演では、UDLの理論的背景と、特別支援を必要とする学習者への配慮から全学習者への利益へと移行した変遷について、講座で学んだ内容を提示する。

UDLによる学習者エンゲージメントの最適化
本講演では、UDLガイドライン3.0を活用し、全ての学習者にとって授業をより魅力的にする実践的な手法を提示します。さらに、自身の教室でガイドラインを適用した成果を共有します。平易な英語と常識的なアプローチにより、UDLガイドラインを会員の皆様により身近なものにします。

Bio プロフィール
David LaHeist is an adjunct lecturer at Okayama University of Science. He moved to Ehime in February 2024, after 23 years of living and teaching in the Tokyo area.  He has previously taught at Jikei University of Medicine, Toho University of Medicine, Komazawa University, Showa Women's University, and Meiji Gakuin University.  He has experience as an international school teacher, ALT and eikaiwa teacher.  His primary research interests are improving student affect and UDL.

デイビッド・ラハイストは岡山理科大学で非常勤講師を務めている。東京地域で23年間生活し教鞭をとった後、2024年2月に愛媛へ移住した。これまでに慈恵医科大学、東邦大学医学部、駒澤大学、昭和女子大学、明治学院大学で教鞭をとった経験がある。  インターナショナルスクールの教師、ALT（外国語補助教員）、英会話教師としての経験を持つ。主な研究関心は、学生の感情状態の改善とユニバーサルデザイン学習（UDL）である。
