Stacey Vye: The Teachers’ Tempered Communication Toolkit: Leveraging Change That Supports Learner Engagement and the Faculty Culture Without Making Waves
The Teachers’ Tempered Communication Toolkit, designed by the presenter, supports participants’ effective communication skills that boost learner engagement and facilitate organizational change, specifically for faculty across primary to tertiary contexts in Japan. The toolkit is simple and easy to leverage change, allowing teachers to keep their jobs without making waves. The tempered change framework is adapted from four strategies: disruptive self-expression, verbal jujitsu, variable-term opportunism (picking low-hanging fruit), and strategic alliance-building (Meyerson 2001; 2008). The tempered communication toolkit works well for teachers with limited agency or resources because the strategies fostered advocacy for students, faculty, and administrators through creative brainstorming, learner input, and learning from failures that lead to innovation. The seemingly impossible becomes possible for educators seeking positive change. In the toolkit, the presenter will also suggest minor adjustments to classroom communication that can help students avoid misunderstandings in pragmatic English use and improve their communication skills, leading to successful outcomes.

DeepL and Chat GPT: 発表者が開発した「教師のためのテンパード・コミュニケーション・ツールキット」は、日本の初等教育から高等教育までの教育現場において、学習者のエンゲージメントを高め、組織変革を促進するための効果的なコミュニケーションスキルの向上を支援するものである。本ツールキットはシンプルで実践しやすく、教師が大きな対立や摩擦を生むことなく、現職にとどまりながら前向きな変化を促すことを可能にする。このテンパード・チェンジの枠組みは、次の四つの戦略を基盤としている。すなわち、自己主張的だが過度に対立を生まない表現、言語的柔術（verbal jujitsu）、機会を見極めて小さな成果から着手する実践（いわゆる “low-hanging fruit” の活用）、そして戦略的な連携構築である（Meyerson 2001; 2008）。本ツールキットは、裁量や資源が限られている教師にとって特に有効である。創造的なブレインストーミング、学習者の意見の取り入れ、さらには失敗から学ぶプロセスを通してイノベーションを生み出し、学生・教員・管理職のためのアドボカシー（支援的提言）を促進するからである。その結果、前向きな変化を求める教育者にとって、一見困難に思えることも実現可能となる。さらに本発表では、教室内コミュニケーションにおける小さな工夫についても提案する。これにより、学生が実践的な英語使用における語用論的な誤解を避け、コミュニケーション能力を高め、より望ましい学習成果につなげることが期待される。
Samantha Kawakami: Identify and Navigate Communication Flow in Your Organization
Recognizing the communication flow in your workplace can help you understand how to communicate and who to communicate with in various situations. Communication flow is the direction of communication in an organization. Different types include downward, upward, and lateral. Most organizations employ multiple communication flows. This presentation will identify the characteristics of the different types of communication flow and recommend some quick strategies for navigating communication in the different environments.
川上サマンサ: 組織内のコミュニケーションの流れを把握し、適切に管理する
職場でのコミュニケーションの流れを把握することで、さまざまな状況において、どのように、誰とコミュニケーションをとればよいかが理解しやすくなります。コミュニケーションの流れとは、組織内におけるコミュニケーションの方向性を指します。その種類には、トップダウン、ボトムアップ、および水平方向のコミュニケーションがあります。多くの組織では、複数のコミュニケーションの流れが存在します。本プレゼンテーションでは、さまざまなコミュニケーションの流れの特徴を明らかにし、それぞれの環境において円滑なコミュニケーションを図るための実践的な戦略をいくつか提案します。

プロフィール:
Stacey Vye is a professor and director of the Center for English Education and Development at Saitama University, and has been teaching there at various capacities since 2008. She earned her doctoral degree (EdD) in Organizational Change and Leadership from the University of Southern California (USC) and her MA in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia. She’s passionate about creatively solving problems to promote self-efficacy, goal achievements, and learner and teacher autonomy. Her bio is lengthy because she has lived in Japan for a time and has previously taught at Meikai University, the International University of Health and Welfare, and Sakushin Gakuin University, all in the Kanto area.
ステイシー・ヴァイは、埼玉大学英語教育開発センターの教授およびセンター長を務めており、2008年より同大学においてさまざまな立場で教育・研究に携わっている。南カリフォルニア大学（USC）にて組織変革とリーダーシップを専攻し、博士号（EdD）を取得。コロンビア大学ティーチャーズ・カレッジにてTESOLの修士号（MA）を取得している。創造的な問題解決を通じて、自己効力感の向上、目標達成の支援、そして学習者および教師の自律性の促進に関心を持ち、研究と実践を行っている。これまで関東地域の明海大学、国際医療福祉大学、作新学院大学などでも教鞭を執ってきた。
Samantha Kawakami lives in Izumo, Shimane-ken, and teaches at the National Institute of Technology, Matsue College (Matsue Kosen). Sam is interested in using technology to make tasks easier and more accessible. She has used and taught other teachers to use a variety of LMSs. Her research interests include pronunciation, LMS usage, and universal design.
