Abstracts :
Developing a UDL (Universal Design for Learning) Mindset

Educators have a history of ignoring variation among learners. In the past, even minor differences, such as being left-handed, were considered too troublesome to accommodate. While modern schools have become more accommodating to handedness, unnecessary barriers remain based on gender, learning abilities, and issues of identity. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) was devised as a framework to systematically identify barriers to learning and to provide options for overcoming them. In the first hour, David will deliver a plain-English explanation of the mindset behind UDL and how it can help improve the experiences of all learners.

Optimizing Student Engagement Through UDL

Recent advances in technology make it more challenging for educators to hold students’ attention. UDL offers a series of evidence-based guidelines to ensure lesson materials are relevant and engaging. David will systematically explain the guidelines, using specific examples of adjusting lesson plans, games, worksheets, and other activities. These plain-language explanations aim to help educators provide options for accessing, building upon, and internalizing lessons.

アブストラクト：

教育者は、学習者間の多様性を無視する傾向があります。かつては、左利きであるといった些細な違いでさえ、対応するのが面倒すぎると考えられていました。最近、学校では利き手への配慮が進んでいますが、性別、学習能力、アイデンティティの問題に基づくバリアーが依然として残っています。 ユニバーサル・デザイン・フォー・ラーニング（UDL）は、学習の障壁を体系的に特定し、それらを克服するための選択肢を提供するための枠組みとして考案されました。最初の1時間、発表者はUDLの背景にある考え方と、それがどのようにしてすべての学習者の体験を改善するのに役立つかを、容易な言葉で紹介します。

UDLによる学習者エンゲージメントの最適化
本講演では、UDLガイドライン3.0を活用し、全ての学習者にとって授業をより魅力的にする実践的な手法を提示します。さらに、自身の教室でガイドラインを適用した成果を共有します。平易な英語と常識的なアプローチにより、UDLガイドラインを会員の皆様により身近なものにします。

Bio プロフィール
David LaHeist is an adjunct lecturer at Okayama University of Science. He moved to Ehime in February 2024, after 23 years of living and teaching in the Tokyo area.  He has previously taught at Jikei University of Medicine, Toho University of Medicine, Komazawa University, Showa Women's University, and Meiji Gakuin University.  He has experience as an international school teacher, ALT and eikaiwa teacher.  His primary research interests are improving student affect and UDL.

技術の急速な進歩により、教育者が生徒の関心を維持することはますます困難になっています。UDL（ユニバーサルデザイン学習）は、教材が生徒にとって関連性が高く、興味を引くものであることを保証するための一連の科学的なエビデンスに基づく指針を提供しています。発表者は、授業計画、ゲーム、ワークシート、その他の活動などを調整する具体的な例を挙げながら、これらの指針を体系的に解説します。容易な言葉で解説することで、教育者は生徒に授業において授業内容にアクセスし、内容を深め、定着させるための選択肢を提供できるように支援することを目的としています。
