Description
Despite increasing prevalence among teachers, chronic illness remains under-researched. This presentation uses qualitative data from interviews with four foreign English teachers with chronic illness in Japan to explore the effects of their illnesses on their working lives. The findings show that the teachers used a variety of job crafting techniques to attempt to bypass barriers caused by their illnesses and reduce the impact of their illnesses in the workplace. These findings can raise awareness of the experiences of teachers with chronic illness in English language teaching in Japan.
