Description
Many beginner English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners experience challenges stemming from limited confidence in their vocabulary knowledge. This presentation describes a vocabulary-first instructional approach implemented in introductory English courses at a STEM-focused university. The approach integrates vocabulary lists, online quizzes, Quizlet, and Kahoot within a structured learning cycle that precedes grammar instruction. Student reflections demonstrate increased self-efficacy as learners recognize their expanding vocabulary and improved comprehension. The presentation analyzes the theoretical rationale, classroom practices, and challenges associated with this approach, and offers practical strategies for educators seeking to promote vocabulary development and learner self-efficacy in similar educational contexts.
