Forum: Pragmatic Appropriateness Across Spoken and Written Modes
Language instruction encompasses learners’ ability to use language pragmatically and appropriately. This forum examines how pragmatic appropriateness varies between spoken and written modes, focusing on the influence of context, interlocutors, topic, and mode-specific characteristics. The 15-minute panel will introduce key issues in spoken and written pragmatics, followed by a 30-minute interactive discussion. Participants will exchange perspectives, examine examples, and collaboratively consider the implications of mode-sensitive pragmatic competence for language teaching.
