This research examines how introducing group work into phonics practice affects elementary school students’ engagement in English lessons, focusing on observable changes in participation and classroom behavior. The study was conducted with sixth-grade students at two public elementary schools in Japan. Using an action research approach, the research study explores how group collaboration may foster students’ participation and phonics development in English learning.
