Description

Sponsored by Waseda University Graduate Student Showcase. This study examines why EMI teachers in Japanese higher education strategically use students’ first language (L1), Japanese, while maintaining English as the primary medium of instruction. Using classroom observations and stimulated recall interviews, it investigates when teachers shift to Japanese and the pedagogical motivations behind these choices. The study aims to deepen understanding of teachers’ strategic L1 use and the role of Japanese in EMI classrooms.
