Abstract section 1: Relevance
English ability is important but the Japan business federation now rates intercultural competence even moreso. How can teachers develop their students' intercultural competence in classrooms that often have students from only one culture? Virtual Exchange, where students interact online with peers in other countries, is one way to do so. Organizing such exchanges is not easy but through participation in the IVEProject teachers can give their students the opportunity to interact with peers from multiple different countries. Students use the English they are studying to discover cultures of peers around the world. In doing so they increase their intercultural understanding.
Abstract section 4: Outcomes/results
Participants will see how they can bring an international community into their classroom and use participation to improve students’ English ability and intercultural competencies. They will learn how virtual exchange transforms standard English classrooms into international collaborations where students truly understand the importance of English. They will also learn how to use virtual exchange and the resources available to gain maximum benefit for their students.
