Extensive reading (ER) has always aimed to develop fluent readers, but how do we know fluency is improving? This presentation explores reading speed as one practical classroom measure and considers what it can and cannot tell us. We also examine how recent developments in language technology are reshaping ER while validating the principles that have been central to successful ER from the very beginning.
