Teaching oral communication to low-level, low-motivation students is hard. Drawing on years of experience in Japanese university classrooms, we have developed practical approaches to engaging students with little experience of interactive English conversation. These approaches informed the development of the New Conversations in Class textbook series. Books 1 and 2 help students take their first steps toward meaningful interaction, while the newly released Book 3 extends these skills to the next level.
