Poster Presentation (60-minutes) Room 1001

Speakers

Alexandra Terashima (University of Tokyo) Bethany Lacy (Rikkyo University) Greg Dalziel (The University of Tokyo) Heather Yoder Joe Geluso (Nihon University College of Law)

Description

The presenters will discuss the steps researchers should take before submitting a manuscript to one of JALT’s three main publications: The Language Teacher, JALT Journal, and the JALT Postconference Publication. Topics will include research ethics, informed consent, choosing the appropriate publication and submission type, checking references, and the responsible use of generative AI. The presenters will also offer practical advice for avoiding common problems and making the submission process smoother.

Abstract section 1: Relevance

The three main JALT publications, The Language Teacher (TLT), JALT Journal (JJ), and the JALT Postconference Publication (PCP), have different purposes, submission categories, and expectations. A manuscript that is appropriate for one publication or submission type may not be suitable for another. Authors can also encounter problems when required documentation is missing, references have not been carefully checked, or publication policies have not been reviewed before submission.

Abstract section 3: Content/method

The presenters will share what they have learned from working with JALT Publications and walk participants through the decisions researchers should make before submitting their work. They will discuss common reasons papers are rejected and how authors can avoid the pitfalls that have caused problems for previous submissions.

Abstract section 2: Contribution/research questions

Submitting a manuscript to a JALT publication can involve more preparation than authors expect. Decisions made before data collection, and even before a manuscript is drafted, can affect whether a submission is ready for review. Research ethics, participant consent, publication requirements, references, and the use of generative AI are just some of the issues authors need to consider.
