Description

This presentation demonstrates version 2.0 of ESL Speed Reading, the free speed reading application and learner management system. The software suite has been rewritten to be more responsive, and new features have been added. The presenter will demonstrate these features, compare digital reading with paper-based reading, and describe how teachers can use the software in their classes. Attendees will receive access to the software suite.

Abstract section 2: Contribution/research questions

The presenter will demonstrate (1) the newest version of the ESL Speed Reading software suite, and (2) how teachers can implement the software in their classrooms. The attendees will leave the presentation with more knowledge of speed reading, how to implement it, and access to the software which will give them everything they need to begin.

Abstract section 4: Outcomes/results

The content of the presentation will focus on speed reading and the software suite developed for it. Firstly, participants will learn about the nature of speed reading, why speed and comprehension both play a role in assessment, and how medium of reading affects development. Subsequently, participants will learn about the speed reading software suite, how to use it, and ideas for implementation.

Abstract section 1: Relevance

Speed reading is an important avenue for developing fluency, yet is often overlooked (Tran, 2012). Being able to read fluently frees cognitive resources which can be allocated to higher-order cognitive skills. Learners can increase their fluency in a relatively short time (Chang, 2010; Chung & Nation, 2006). Traditional, paper-based implemention is time-consuming due to administrative overhead (e.g., distributing materials). Technological advances have made it easy to incorporate speed reading digitally, removing the administrative burden, and allowing learners to focus on the purpose of the activity; to increase the speed at which they can read.q

Abstract section 3: Content/method

The presentation will begin with an overview of speed reading, including a brief literature review. Then, the presenter will transition into the relationship between reading medium (paper versus digital device) and fluency development, discussing research they conducted comparing these two media. Finally, the presenter will demonstrate the software for the audience. Interested attendees will receive a free teacher account which will allow them to monitor their students' speed reading progress.
