Extensive reading remains fundamental to second language acquisition (Krashen, 1989; Nation, 2015), yet selecting appropriately leveled authentic materials presents ongoing challenges for EFL practitioners. While popular adolescent fiction series offer sustained engagement and natural language exposure (Day & Bamford, 1998), empirical evidence regarding their linguistic progression is limited. Understanding how lexical and syntactic complexity develops across such series could inform evidence-based text selection and sequencing decisions (Crossley et al., 2007). This research addresses the need for corpus-driven analysis of widely-read adolescent literature to determine whether linguistic features align with learner proficiency trajectories, particularly in EFL contexts.
Abstract section 3: Content/method
The seven Harry Potter novels were analyzed using corpus-linguistic methods (Biber et al., 2004). Lexical complexity was assessed through type-token ratio, hapax legomena, Guiraud's Index (Richards, 1987), and vocabulary coverage using standardized word lists (Nation, 2006). Syntactic complexity was measured through mean length of utterance and verbal elements per sentence (Hunt, 1970). Readability indices determined processing difficulty. Results were compared with adolescent linguistic development research and mapped to proficiency frameworks.
