Abstract section 1: Relevance
In a globalized world, students need to be able to interact with a variety of global Englishes and accents. The activity here utilizes a communicative approach, encouraging students to engage with real-life English in a fanciful setting, but with real world application. The activity leans on constructivist frameworks, with students working together to understand language use in a global setting as a team, working through global language expressions and their use within teacher-created narrative activities, analyzing possible language mistakes with critical analysis, and performing a final presentation to demonstrate mastery of the material.
Abstract section 4: Outcomes/results
This is a poster presentation, but basically, I was really pleased with how the English Camp experience came off this year. Students seemed to really enjoy the activities, and I was glad to see the success of the playful use of a spy-theme for teaching global Englishes. Attendees will learn about the decisions I made in creating the activities, how successful they were with students in my particular situation, as well as ideas for how to revise and adapt the concepts for other educational situations.
Abstract section 2: Contribution/research questions
I want to share what I learned in creating a spy-themed English Camp experience for college students to help other teachers to think through how they can use similar methods to introduce global Englishes for their students in novel classroom situations. I would also love to get some feedback on how I can improve my classroom activities for future classroom experiences.
Abstract section 3: Content/method
I will include a series of explanations on my poster for the activities that I designed. In this case, a scavenger hunt that included short dialogues showcasing language mistakes, a poster presentation introducing national cultures outside of just language, a short story incorporating a series of puzzles students must solve while interacting with the set language, and a final skit performed live on stage with students demonstrating their understanding of the language and culture.
