Description

Sponsored by Nagoya University Graduate Student Showcase: This study investigates how AI-assisted preparation affects task motivation and speaking performance among high school EFL learners who value speaking practice but cannot overcome speaking anxiety. By implementing pre-task planning between individual and generative AI (Gen-AI) such as chatbots before oral text retelling, we evaluate learners' motivation and oral performance in subsequent activities with peers, clarifying Gen-AI’s role in enhancing overall engagement in oral pedagogical activities.

Abstract section 1: Relevance

Japanese high school EFL learners often struggle with speaking anxiety despite valuing oral practice. Generative AI (Gen-AI) may serve as a low-anxiety tool for pre-task planning.

Abstract section 2: Contribution/research questions

This study investigates how Gen-AI-assisted preparation affects high-anxiety learners' subsequent task motivation and oral retelling performance with peers.

Abstract section 4: Outcomes/results

This study will demonstrate how Gen-AI pre-task planning mitigates speaking anxiety and contributes to improvements in learners' task motivation and oral retelling proficiency.

Abstract section 3: Content/method

Participants will conduct individual pre-task planning with a Gen-AI chatbot before performing an oral text-retelling activity. Their motivation and subsequent oral performance during peer interaction will be evaluated.
