Description

Modular Instructional Design is an integration of microlearning strategies into curriculum design in a way that streamlines lesson planning, promotes classroom emotional safety, and builds dynamic, interactive learning environments. Modular Instructional Design builds on the principles of microlearning, balances classroom routines with task variation, and provides a framework for teachers to seamlessly create well-structured lessons.

Abstract section 3: Content/method

Participants will be introduced to the core elements of Modular Instructional Design, including examples of what a fully constructed modular lesson plan. Participants will receive handouts containing assembled modular tasks based on microlearning principles and be invited to try out sample lessons featuring Modular Instructional Design. Through a guided lesson walkthrough, demonstrations of sample activities, and an interactive discussion session, attendees will gain practical “use on Monday” ideas, strategies, and activities for their classrooms.

Abstract section 2: Contribution/research questions

The purpose of this presentation is to introduce Modular Instructional Design, a microlearning-based lesson planning method that reduces teacher fatigue, boosts student engagement, and aligns with emerging best practices for Gen Z learners. This approach addresses the core needs of Gen Z learners for interactive learning environments and supports teachers by streamlining the lesson design process into quicker, smaller, and more digestible learning tasks, thereby lowering lesson preparation time.

Abstract section 1: Relevance

Modular Instructional Design is the authors’ integration of microlearning strategies into curriculum design in a way that streamlines lesson planning, promotes classroom emotional safety, and builds dynamic, interactive learning environments. Research demonstrates microlearning boosts student engagement by paring down content into “bite-sized” learning segments, lowering cognitive load and enhancing knowledge retention (Kossen & Ooi, 2021). Modular Instructional Design builds on the principles of microlearning, balances classroom routines with task variation, and provides a framework for teachers to seamlessly create well-structured lessons. Recent literature further suggests microlearning is an effective strategy to engage Gen Z learners (Shah et al., 2025).

Abstract section 4: Outcomes/results

Participants will learn the benefits of microlearning and how to streamline lesson planning following the principles of Modular Instructional Design. Participants will be shown how to not only align microlearning tasks with content objectives but how to use these tasks as both pre and post assessment. Participants will learn how to create and assemble their own learning modules that are varied, engaging, and learner-focused into fully developed lesson plans. The session will also facilitate collaborative teaching practices by having participants share their microlearning tasks, modules, and activities with each other.
