Abstract section 1: Relevance
Teaching English in English-speaking contexts creates expectations among learners who assume that immersion will naturally accelerate their progress, underestimating the need for classroom learning. As a result, teachers may view fluency as the primary goal and deemphasize explicit grammar instruction. Historically, grammar instruction has shifted between central and peripheral roles in language teaching. Grammar once dominated language classrooms, but with the rise of Communicative Language Teaching the emphasis moved toward authentic communication and meaning-focused interaction. While this helped promote fluency and real-world language use, it also contributed to a perception that grammar instruction is outdated or incompatible with communicative teaching.
Abstract section 2: Contribution/research questions
I will argue that grammar does not need to be excluded in order to maintain communicative teaching goals. Instead, grammar can function as a supportive framework that helps learners communicate more confidently and accurately. The session will demonstrate how teachers can integrate explicit grammar instruction into communicative lessons in ways that reinforce both fluency and accuracy.
Abstract section 3: Content/method
Through classroom examples and practical activities, the presentation illustrates several strategies for embedding grammar within communicative tasks. These include brief focus-on-form explanations, guided discovery activities, and communicative tasks that require students to notice and apply grammatical structures during interaction. The aim is to show how grammar can be presented as a resource for clearer communication rather than as a set of isolated rules.
Abstract section 4: Outcomes/results
Participants will gain practical strategies for integrating grammar instruction into communicative lessons without sacrificing interaction or fluency. They will leave with techniques for presenting grammar in accessible ways that build learner confidence and support long-term language development.
