In this workshop teachers will gain a better understanding of the capabilities and weaknesses of a variety of LMSs. The presenter will introduce key features – benefits and weaknesses – of Moodle and Teams. Participants will then have the opportunity to discuss their own LMSs and how they use them. Following this discussion, the presenter will demonstrate a hybrid usage of Teams and Moodle, pointing out the advantages and the risks of using multiple LMSs.
Abstract section 1: Relevance
Since the COVID pandemic, the expectation that teachers use some type of Learning Management System (LMS) has become standard. Depending on the institution, teachers are locked into one specific system or have a choice between systems. All LMS’s have different strengths and weaknesses, some things they do well and others that can be frustratingly inadequate. For example, Teams and Google Classroom are better for document collaboration, while Moodle is better for activity types and resources. The issue is that many teachers are not aware of the capabilities and limitations of their LMSs and how students experience using them.
Abstract section 4: Outcomes/results
In this workshop participants will gain a better understanding of the capabilities and weaknesses of a variety of LMSs. A key consideration is best-use practice of LMSs in order to meet course goals considering the perspective of both teachers and students. It is important that the LMS makes it easier for students to access materials and submit assignments without becoming a hurdle they need to overcome. It is equally important to consider systems that make it easier for teachers to communicate with and assess students. Teachers will come away with ideas for how to maximize usage of their LMSs.
Abstract section 2: Contribution/research questions
To present key features of different LMSs, consider which types of tasks the LMSs are best suited for, and demonstrate how to use multiple LMSs in a hybrid manner without overwhelming students.
Abstract section 3: Content/method
I will introduce key features of Moodle and Teams. I will talk about differences between these two systems, showing what they do well and areas where they need improvement. There will then be discussion time where participants can compare the strengths and weaknesses of other systems they are using. Following this, I will show how I have taken the best parts of both Teams and Moodle to create a hybrid system.
